The Artist's Handbook
by Ray Smith
An excellent layout on the materials used in the fields of Fine Art and Craft . Special mention is to be made of secret mediums not used in old master painting , with reference to research done at the National Gallery [London]. A welcome addition to the educated Artist's study, should sit well along side one's Ralph Mayer .Also in keeping with todays emphasis on health , there are more than adequate references , to ASTM standards. The only noticeable grey areas are the weak chapters on Vitreous Enamelling and Ceramic Tiles ,perhaps added as an after thought.

Secret Knowledge: Rediscovering the Lost Techniques of the Old Masters
by David Hockney
Recently, David Hockney, often described as the "world's most popular artist," has made headlines not with his own work but with his sensational and controversial theories about how some of Western art's famous masterpieces—paintings by artists such as da Vinci, Caravaggio, Velázquez, and Van Eyck—were actually created. A chance observation of a drawing in London's National Gallery led Hockney to ask, "How was this done?"

Anatomy for the Artist

Carefully constructed photographs of the human form allow you to see the structure and function of the skeleton and main muscle groups. Six imaginative drawing lessons, each supported with photography, show how to portray the bones, head, rib cage, pelvis, hands, and feet in perspective, from different angles, both in still poses and in movement.

The Artist's Complete Guide to Facial Expression
by Gary Faigin
Faigin's drawings and explanation of facial expressions is detailed and well organized. He breaks each expression down to the muscles and utilizes theory to compliment his explanations. This book provides a good foundation for understanding facial expressions and contains enough illustrations for those who do not care for theory. The only thing missing from the book are photographs of different facial types.
