"For the past few years, I've been painting still lifes and ensembles of objects conceived from imagination. My subject is the common, essential stuff arrayed in the painter's studio: easels, canvases, tables, stools, a ladder, paint tubes, brushes, pots, cans, boxes, tools, rags, paper towels. Such workaday things embody my main preoccupation -- the tradition of painting. For me, concrete things are an anchor, and so I am a representational painter. However, when I'm working, the objects in my pictures are not fixed. I alter, recombine, and drag around forms in accordance with my feeling for the developing construction and pictorial space, and also for the unexpected events that occur during an improvisatory process. As a painter, I'm more immediately concerned by how forms come into being in paint - how they tell - more than by what they tell about. I don't set out to paint symbolic narratives; history simply creeps in and meaning occurs."
